Timothy Fellows
Timothy Hopkins Fellows (March 14, 1812 – November 5, 1894) was an American farmer from Bloomfield, Wisconsin who served on the board of supervisors of Bloomfield (including as its chairman) and also served two one-year terms (1852-1853) as a Free Soil Party member of the Wisconsin State Assembly from Walworth County.〔("Members of the Wisconsin Legislature 1848–1999 State of Wisconsin Legislative Bureau. Information Bulletin 99-1, September 1999. p. 49 )〕
== Background ==
Fellows was born March 14, 1812 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, one of thirteen children born to Abiel Fellows, Jr., and his third wife, Dorcas Hopkins. At the age of seventeen he joined his father in moving to Kalamazoo County, Michigan, where he eventually bought his own farm and farmed for about a decade. He married Elizabeth (or Eliza; sources differ) Ann Duncan on December 1, 1831.〔"TIMOTHY H. FELLOWS" in, ''History of Walworth County, Wisconsin: Containing an Account of Its Settlement, Growth, Development and Resources; an Extensive and Minute Sketch of Its Cities, Towns and Villages, Their Improvements, Industries, Manufactories, Churches, Schools and Societies; Its War Record, Biographical Sketches, Portraits of Prominent Men and Early Settlers; the Whole Preceded by a History of Wisconsin, Statistics of the State, and an Abstract of Its Laws and Constitution and the Constitution of the United States''. Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1882; pp. 837-838〕 The couple were to have eleven children, six of whom survived to adulthood.
In the spring of 1840, the family moved to Wisconsin Territory, settling in the southeast corner of Walworth County on about half a square mile of land in Sections 34 and 35 on the south edge of the county and of the state, creating a homestead where he would live for the rest of his life. This was frontier country, wild and without roads; Fellows had to blaze the trees in order not to lose his way.〔"Timothy H. Fellows" in, ''Portrait and biographical record of Walworth and Jefferson counties, Wisconsin, containing biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens of the county, together with biographies and portraits of all the presidents of the United States'' Chicago:Lake City Publishing, 1894; pp. 180-182〕 In addition to farming, Fellows also worked as a merchant in his early years.
